The affect of one player

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

The 2009 NFL draft is complete and the majority of the mock drafts have been proven to be wrong (mine wasn’t close) and even the “great” Mel Kiper was wrong on most picks. It is nearly impossible to be 100% right with the brilliance of Al Davis destroying the validity of any draft by taking a player 30 of the other 31 teams had as an undrafted free agent. I believe Al Davis could draft a fantasy team and not win a single game. With that said; the speculation begins for NFL fans everywhere. Some have hopes and dreams of playoff runs (see Texans, Seattle and Green Bay) while others are hoping for a single win to show improvement over last season (See Detroit). A single player seemed to be the identity of this draft. Let’s discuss the impact this player could have had on The Texans and what affect we can expect him to have on the Lions.
Commissioner: “We have a trade. The Texans trade their entire draft to Detroit and with the first pick in the 2009 draft the Texans select; Matt Stafford, quarterback, Georgia!” We could have heard a similar call a few years ago but replace Stafford’s name with that of Vince Young. Anyone still upset about that…….? I didn’t think so. For argument sake; we look at the affect a Matt Stafford could have on the Houston Texans. You could see the “Matt Ryan/Joe Flacco phenomenon occur and why not? All the pieces are in place right? Well not quite. The Falcons and Ravens had enough defense (especially the Ravens) to stop teams. Without a solid defensive focused draft in 2009 the Texans could improve their offense all they wanted and still not have a good chance at the playoffs in 2009-10. They would be better offensively, I don’t doubt that. But a quarterback, I don’t care how good, won’t get you to the playoffs if you can’t stop the other team from scoring.
Now, what should we expect the affect to be on the Lions? Not good, not good at all unless he sits and watches. What must they have been thinking with the 20th pick when they sent the card in with Brandon Pettigrew’s name on it?? Michael Oher was right there and could have become the building block for the Lions new offensive line. I agree Pettigrew can block but that’s not what you draft a tight end for….is it? The Lions seemed to conjure up the spirit of Al Davis and Matt Milan combined for this draft. They filled a hole at quarterback (see 2008-09 Raiders draft) but then didn’t put anything around him. Is it possible we could see back to back 0-16 seasons??? YES IT IS!!!! I could not feel worse for any player than I feel for Matthew Stafford. He is a good quarterback that; like David Carr, may never realize his true potential. If the Lions do things the smart way; and we have no reason to believe that they will, Culpepper will start. If Stafford is paid his enormous contract to sit on the sideline for the next season or two and learn the NFL while the Lions figure out what offensive linemen are used for he has a chance of actually turning that franchise around in, oh, let’s say….2011. But it won’t happen this year.

The Houston Texan’s Draft….

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Two rounds of the Draft are complete and this year the Texan’s defense got a boost. Houston Texans took a first round pick of OLB Brian Cushing. Cushing is a strong and very versitile athlete, he will bring a hard working attitude to the locker room that will hopefully flood throughout the team.  Kubiak stated after their selection that Cushing carries that blue collar mentality and is all business, he felt that is what seperated him from the rest of his competition during this draft. This all business attitude is what is needed with this team to get this team down to business.

Houston Texan’s 2nd round pick came at number 46, picking DE Connor BarwinBarwin is an extremely atheletic and will give the Texans defense some depth at the DE position. He will give the Texans an opportunity to move around the front line of the defense and give opponents some new looks at a defensive front. Barwin will find his place moving around on both sides of the defensive line and will have an opportunity to really learn the position from one of the Texan greats, Mario Williams.

So far the Texans have made some really positive moves defensively for this team, and with the next 2 rounds to come it will be nice to see what direction this team decides to go. The Texans can still use a back up RB and can’t go wrong bringing in another offensive lineman.

Should Texans go after Cutler?

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Quarterback Jay Cutler #6 of the Denver Broncos delivers a pass against the Dallas Cowboys during preseason NFL action at Invesco Field at Mile High on August 16, 2008 in Denver, Colorado.

Cutler seems destined to be in a new uniform next season after feeling that his head coach does not want him.  When he realized that the Broncos tried to trade for Matt Cassell, the former Vanderbilt QB is requesting a trade.  Question is where will he end up?  Several teams could use a QB(Detroit, St. Louis, NY Jets, Chicago, Tampa Bay…to name a few) but an interesting option might be the Texans.  Anyone will tell you Cutler has all the physical tools to be a great NFL quarterback and might already be in the top 10 at his position, if not higher.  Matt Schaub has been good when healthy, but has not proven he can play a full season.  On the other hand Cutler has not missed a game since becoming the Broncos starter, is two years younger than Schaub, and has a ProBowl on his resume.

Chances are the Texans don’t even make a call to check on the availability of Jay Cutler because they seem poised to make a run at their first winning record and possible playoff birth this season with a returning cast that was 8-8 last season, and a couple breaks from a much better outcome.  Think what might have happened if it was Cutler with the same Texans team for 16 games and not the combination of Schaub/Sage.  They would probably have at least 1 more win and a 9-7 season saving the fans of the ridiculous “Rosencopter” memory and horrible collapse to the Colts.

Question is, if the Broncos asked for Schaub and Texans 2nd round pick for Cutler would you do it?  I would!

And of course…The Cowboys Suck!!!!!

Texans in the Community

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

It’s nice to see some of the guys taking the initiative to make a difference in the community. This was posted yesterday on the Texans site and I felt like it needed to be shared. It’s a great story and it is making an impact on the community. This was written by Texans writer, Brooke Bentley.

Very little in DelJuan Robinson’s life has come easy to him, including football.

He was listed by Rivals.com as the country’s top defensive end recruit coming out of high school in Hernando, Miss., but after his senior season, the defensive tackle was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve. Robinson underwent open heart surgery and was forced to sit out what should have been his freshman year of college.

Robinson had a productive season at Mississippi State, but he was passed over in the 2007 NFL Draft. He signed by the Texans as an undrafted free agent and spent most of his first season on the practice squad.

Last year, Robinson’s hard work and determination paid off. He started three games for an injured Amobi Okoye and registered 28 tackles and a forced fumble. In the Texans’ 13-12 win over the Titans, Robinson played only 18 snaps but recorded three tackles for a loss.

“I have been through the fire, but you still can make it. Every day I get a chance to do what I love to do, but it didn’t come easy.” - DelJuan Robinson

Robinson doesn’t take his recent success for granted. He views his life in the NFL as temporary and says he can’t afford to let up if he wants to keep his job.“I’ve been through trials and tribulations,” Robinson said. “I have been through the fire, but you still can make it. Every day I get a chance to do what I love to do, but it didn’t come easy.

“It’s not easy when you’re a temp like me. It’s the National Football League. If it was easy, everybody in America would be doing it; there wouldn’t be enough football fields. But you have to be disciplined, able to learn information and then go out and do it.

“When you get that opportunity, you have to take advantage of it, knowing that it could end at any moment. You’ve got to seize the moment and know that you’ve got to put the work in, and that’s why it’s hard for a temp.”

On Monday, Robinson shared his unique story and perspective with the football team from Houston’s Stephen F. Austin High School. The school is taking part in the NFL’s “Play it Smart” program, which places an athletic counselor at a high school to help to get students into college. All 23 HISD schools are taking part in the program, and Dytonya Jones has been at Stephen F. Austin for the last year working as the athletic counselor.

Jones contacted the Texans because she wanted a player who could talk to the school’s football team about the importance of receiving an education, no matter what one’s hardships might have been.

She got what she asked for with Robinson

“His story was really inspiring because he really focused on being a student first, and that is what we stress,” Jones said. “As a student athlete, it’s important for them to get in the classroom and then make an automatic transition to whatever they choose to pursue. His was the NFL. All of our kids can’t go to the NFL, and he really drove that home. Our kids needed to hear that from a professional athlete.”

Robinson told the team that he struggled to pass the standardized tests that would allow him to get into college and took the ACT at least five times until he got the required score. He persisted because he knew he had to get into college to play football at the next level.

He told the students how close he was to losing his football career due to heart surgery, but he fought back because he wanted to go to college and earn his degree. Robinson told them about barely making the Texans’ roster and the hard work he has put in to keep his place there.

His message seemed to impact the high schoolers, who listened attentively in their cafeteria and gave Robinson a hearty applause at the end of his speech.

For Robinson, the day was all about showing young athletes how far he has come and how far they can go if they work hard in school and on the field.

“Football is going to end one day and you have to have something to fall back on, and I realize that,” Robinson. “In this business, I realize that you have to have something to fall back on. If you don’t have your education, what do you have, especially in today’s times when people can’t get jobs? I can get a leg up on someone because I have an education. Education is the key to it.”

Roger Clemens a Texan’s Fan?

Hell I don’t know if Roger Clemens is a Texans Fan or not but I think any Houston sports fan will say this. “Leave the dude alone!” I can’t believe that we are still hearing stuff about the guy using steriods. WHO CARES!!! This country has so many freaken problems going on right now and all our Congress has time to do is sit around and worry whether a freaken baseball player took some illegal substances.  Leave the guy alone.  No matter what he is one of the greatest pitchers to ever play the game.  So what if he shot himself up to extend his career, so what if he shot up pain killers to continue to pitch,  so what if he was putting himself at risk for all this. This was a great Athlete no matter what the end result is. I just think it is embarrassing to the sport of baseball and to the this country that we have our United States Congress spending over a year on whether Roger Clemens did in deed take performance enhancing drugs. These LOSERS want to ruin the great name of Roger Clemens and drive him into the ground. Not too mention this freak , Brian McNamee, who saves freaken syringes that were supposedly used to inject Clemens. All for what?? MONEY. All this because Roger Clemens wasn’t good enough to this guy to begin with? Roger used to let him stay at his lake house, beach house etc.. All for free.. And this is the thank you he gets for that.  The man now has to ruin a Hall of Famers career and throw him under the bus for the sole source of Greed and Money. Yeah we feel bad about his daughter or son’s illness, but to do this to someone who trusted in you. It’s evil through and through.  Congress get off your asses and get our economy going again, and stop worrying about stupid shit like whether a former professional athlete took performance enhancement drugs.  Maybe we should have drug screening and drug testing on all of you. I’m sure we can find plenty of crap in all your systems with the way you guys have been handling this economy.  Hell lets start with Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, I’m sure her tank is full of crapl!!

Texans 4-3 defense?

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I’m anxious to see if we can’t get more pressure on the quarterback this year continuing with the 4-3 defensive front. With four good down linemen and picking up some strength in the outside linebacker position; I’m going to vote that this is the right defense to stay with.  My opinion with a power horse like Mario Williams who is still young and growing into his role for the defense, the Texans need to find ways to better utilize him. Possibly consider moving him as a dual side defensive end and get him comfortable going in as a right or left side threat.  If we can get him the support in layer two of the defense then the Texan’s defense is going to be a force to be reconded with. Not to mention giving the defense some additional schemes to go off of. If the Texans can keep everyone healthy this season defensively, then I think the adjustments being made this offseason and depending on who is picked up in the Draft will make a world of difference compared to last season.   We’re soon to find out.
